Just before the Ottoman conquest of 1570, the Venetians destroyed what was left of the two towers with the use of explosives, in accordance with their decision to base the defense of the island on three towns of Famagusta, Lefkosia and Kyrenia. What survives today is the Ottoman restoration of the western Frankish tower, its Venetian additions and the remains of the second tower at a distance of 50m, to the east.
View - View of Paphos Castle. The remains of the tower, incorporated into the Ottoman building, belonged to one of two towers erected by the Frankish rulers of Cyprus, after the destructive earthquake of 1222 A.D. The two towers were interconnected by a curtain wall. When the Genoese captured the fort in 1373 A.D., they raised the height of its walls and shaped the moat, simply by cutting part of the mole which provides access from the seaward tower to the shore.
