At present the mansion serves as the Royal Guest House for visiting Heads of State and guests of Their Majesties.
When King Mongkut, Rama IV, came to the throne he had a residential complex built on the present Sivalaya garden to the east of the Phra Maha Monthien, the main part of this being given the name of Borom Phiman. Due to the inferior building materials available at the time, the buildings had to be rebuilt in the reign of King Rama V. The new building was also named Borom Phiman and was located slightly north of the original structure. When King Rama VI ascended the throne, he saw to it that the new Borom Phiman be renovated. Among the innovations was the quadrangular dome over the inner chamber with frescoes depicting the Siamese conception of the Vedic gods of India, venerated as the Guardians of the universe. Beneath these gods are inscibed with the ten kingly virtues to be observed by a monarch. On the east side, beneath the God Indra are the virtues of danam (giving), silam (righteous conduct), and pariccagam (personal sacrifice, material as well as spirtual). On the south side beneath the God Yama are the virtues of ajjavam (honesty and freedom from pretence), maddavam (gentleness and humility), and tapam (concentration of effort). On the west side beneath the God Varuna are the virtues of akkodham (freedom from anger), and avihimsa (freedom from malice). Finally, on the north side under the God Agni are the virtues of khanti (patience) and avirodhanam (avoidance of wrong doing).
To the south of the Borom Phiman mansion lies the tastefully proportioned Chapel of the Crystal Buddha (the Buddha Ratana Starn Hall), and to the west, the Mahisorn Prasat, a gabled pavilion built by King Rama II. Beyond these buildings lies the Sutthai Sawan Pavilion, used occasionally in the past for ceremonies during hot weather, and the Sivalai Maha Prasat Hall which formerly housed the statues of His Majesty the King's predecessors, which were removed from the Royal Monastery of the Emerald Buddha.
