View - After conquering Jerusalem in the 7th century, the 9th Islamic Caliph, Abd al-Malik, built the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount, the high flat area where the first and second Temples of Jerusalem once stood. Dome of the Rock isn't a mosque but literally a dome covering a rock - Jerusalem, Israel.

Muslim pilgrimage - The Dome of the Rock, (Arabic: مسجد قبة الصخرة) constructed around 691 CE by Umayyad Dynasty, this has become the third holiest site for Muslim pilgrimage, after Mecca and Medina. It is probably the oldest surviving example of early Islamic architecture. The Dome of the Rock is a Muslim shrine which stands on raised bedrock which is traditionally believed to be the place where the first Jewish temple was built. It was also here that people believe Abraham tried to sacrifice his son to God and where Muhammad is believed to have ascended into heaven in order to receive God's commandments.
